Preventing Blocked Drains
One of the absolute best methods to keep your drain free is to be careful about what you put into them. Cooking fat, coffee grounds, soap scum and hair are a drain’s biggest enemies. Avoid getting any of these substance down the drain.
Put cooking fat in an old tin or milk container. Then dispose of it in the rubbish or recycle if you have the facility in food waste.
Throw coffee grounds away in the waste bin or add them to your compost heap.
Use a mesh screen to cover the drain’s opening and prevent problems with hair and soap scum.
Take a picture on your phone when looking for one to help in getting the right item. Most filters and screens sit on top of the drain.
Regular cleaning works. To keep your homes drains running free and without smells.
Run hot water down the drain after use. Hot water keeps oils in food products liquid preventing them setting on the inside of pipes which can result in blockages.
It is also great for absorbing foul smells and leaving your drain pipes better than they otherwise might smell.
A cup of vinegar down the drain left for 30 minutes before flushing with hot water works vinegar is great cleaner being mostly acetic acid it removes organic build up in pipes.
Add half a cup of baking soda, salt and vinegar to the blocked drain and add at least a litre of boiling water.
Leave overnight for the mixture to work for best results.
Pour the salt and the baking soda down the drain.
Add the vinegar and let the mixture foam for a minute. Then add the boiling water.
Caustic Soda is a strong and corrosive chemical called an alkali. It should only be used according to instruction. As it dissolves it gets hot, so hot it can boil water and that boiling caustic water can spit in your eyes, so NEVER add to hot water in the first place !!
A combination of the hot corrosive liquid and the alkali might be what is needed but if you have any doubt, get in contact.
